According to CLS on Friday 6 May, CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited), the global leader in lithium-ion battery development and manufacturing, has joined forces with top energy companies in China to boost the development of energy storage systems. The company’s strategic partners include China Energy Investment, State Power Investment Corporation, China Three Gorges Corporation, and China Energy Engineering Corporation.

Why it matters

As the world’s largest battery maker, CATL has also developed in-depth business cooperation with the world’s top ten clients for energy storage systems such as Nextera, Fluence, Wartsila, Tesla, and Powin, according to CLS.

According to Reuters, CATL is in the final stages of vetting sites for producing electric vehicle batteries in the U.S., which would mark the Chinese company’s initial production in the world’s second-largest car market.

Context

Established in 2011, CATL specializes in the production of lithium-ion batteries for EVs, energy storage systems, and battery management systems. With a market share of 32.6%, the company ranked first globally in EV battery consumption volume for five consecutive years in 2021.
